Wilhelm Grimm was the second oldest of six siblings, and would later embark on an industrious writing and scholarly career with his older brother, Jacob. Wilhelm Grimm first attended school in Kassel, then Wilhelm studied law at the University of Marburg from to , following the path of their lawyer father. Wilhelm Grimm was a 19th century German author who, along with brother Jacob, published Grimms' Fairy Tales, a collection famous for stories like Cinderella and Rapunzel. While studying at the University, the inspiration of Friedrich von Savigny awakened in him an interest in past cultures. Influenced by German Romanticism, a prevailing movement of the time, the brothers robustly studied the folklore of their region, with an emphasis on recording village oral storytelling that was vanishing with the advent of new technology.

As the title suggests, Freyberger focuses not only on stylistic, but also on narratological aspects of fairytale illustrations. She describes the images as autonomous "texts" that transcend their merely illustrative function to constitute meaning of their own or even to become art for art's sake.
She demonstrates how different types of pictures such as monoscenic or synoptic frames, image cycles or arabesques can produce a variety of tones and atmospheres, resulting in horrid, idyllic, folkloristic, or childlike imagery. With her "iconography of key scenes," Freyberger demonstrates how specific motifs have established themselves as emblems of individual fairytales and how they continue to influence the reception of these tales to the present day.
She also situates the "fairytales in pictures" within the context of the history of books and printing, taking into consideration publishers' marketing strategies as well as larger socio-political trends.
